Thermal, California (28 February, 2019) – Porsche Trophy West USA had tires on the track this morning at 8:45am, for the first practice session of the 2019 test days at The Thermal Club.
Nineteen Porsche GT3 and GT4 Cup Cars in four classes took part in the combined 3.5 hours of practice time: Bronze (Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4 MR and Cayman Clubsport GT4 Trophy), Gold (Porsche 991.1 GT3 Cup), Platinum (Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup), Emerald (Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup MR).
Set before the mountainous backdrop of Thermal, California the drivers of Porsche Trophy West USA took full advantage of the opportunity to put themselves and their cars to the test. The sounds of the well-tuned GT3 and GT4 engines erupted through the desert air as the drivers and their teams dialed in their Porsche machines. It became very clear that with each lap, drivers such as 2018 Diamond Masters champion, Michael Zuieback were getting back into the swing of things.
“It was good to knock the rust off,” said Zuieback. “It was great to be back on track and in the car having some fun. I think that by the end of tomorrow we’ll have a pretty good idea of where we need to be, and we should be ready for the 2019 season.”
Porsche Trophy West USA warmly welcomed several new drivers to the series at The Thermal Club. The first test day of the 2019 season proved to be an exciting time for the new drivers, and it was very clear that they were just as eager to burn some rubber. One new driver was Stephen Ayres driving his new Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup Car.
“With a new car, a new track, and a new series, it was a bit of overload. But it will all come together” said Ayres. “I’m getting up to speed on the series and the tracks. It’s nothing we haven’t done before but it’s still a great learning experience. I’m looking to be clean, safe, and competitive, as well as have some fun out there.”
Porsche Trophy West USA will return to The Thermal Club tomorrow, February 28 for their second round of the two 2019 test days.
